If you’re interested in kiln-formed glass than this is the class for you. For beginners and experienced glass artists alike, these six class periods will allow students to work through a wide range of projects that utilize the kiln shop as well as the cold shop. A small portion of the class will be dedicated to expanding your understanding of the technical side of kiln-formed glass.
Class projects include:
Kiln-carved plate. This process lends itself to the creation of elaborate patterns or imagery that are then pressed into the back of a glass panel when heated. This panel is then slumped (melted) into a bowl or plate shape.
Pattern bars and beyond. This project will move beyond the basic fusing and slumping skills and incorporate some coldworking techniques. You will effectively utilize the fusing studio in conjunction with the cold shop to perfect exciting new skills. You also will focus on thick pattern bars and will be fusing and coldworking several times to create intricately patterned vessels. You will be encouraged to let your own style shine through. Expect to work hard in the cold shop as well as the fusing studio and take home art you will be proud of.
Lost wax casting. Students begin with a pre-made wax form that they can manipulate to make their first casting. Basic coldworking methods are demonstrated and available to the students for further exploration. The "lost wax" project also takes students step by step through the hand-built refractory mold process and provides another opportunity to refine coldworking skills.
Basic supplies and materials are included. Additional materials are available.
Tuition (includes basic materials and supplies): $300
